England’s comprehensive win means that they will face Australia in the semi-finals, a repeat of the 2008 World Cup decider, while the Welsh take on the might of World Cup favourites France in the second semi-final.Jack Brown bagged six tries as England put in a convincing performance and Jack Heggie contributed 20 points from two tries and six conversions.

“We needed to win by more than 19 going into the game to top the group and it was a really good performance,” said Heggie. “I can’t wait for the semi finals now.”

Wales were lacklustre compared to the side that earned an historic win over Australia at the weekend as England surged into a 34-0 lead at halftime.

England made a good start as within the opening six minutes, Chris Greenhalgh dummied his way over and Brown doubled the advantage when he touched down in the corner, Heggie adding the extras to both to put the hosts 12-0 ahead.

Brown split the Welsh defence as he added two more tries to complete his hat trick with 17 minutes played.He then turned provider as he flicked the ball onto Heggie who collected his first try to increase the gap to 28-0.

The Welsh defence rallied until the final minute of the half, Heggie chasing down a high kick from Phil Roberts to ground his second try and convert.

Four minutes into the second period, Brown picked up a loose ball and pushed the full length of the court to grab his fourth try and, soon after, a fifth as he crashed to the floor backwards between the posts.

Wales finally got on the scoreboard as England were penalized for offside and captain Paul Craig converted.

Nobody in the Welsh side could stop Brown as he coasted through for his sixth touchdown, Mike Stevenson adding the extras to bring up the half century.

Craig grounded a consolation try for the Welsh but they will now need to regroup for an even tougher test against an in-form France squad.
