Match report

Canada won its second straight Caribbean Carnival Cup by defeating Jamaica 18-12 at Lamport Stadium in Toronto. The match was a closely fought affair with Canada eventually taking it by four tries to two. The match was played in front of 4,630 fans making it a Canadian record crowd for an international rugby league match.

The match was a struggle featuring plenty of big hits that forced a higher than average number of turnovers. Jamaica looked good early when they opened the scoring, Ryan Grant converting an early penalty into 2 points from in front of the posts.

Canada soon hit back, Matt Wyles blew through a trio of Reggae Warrior defenders to score after some sustained pressure from the Wolverines. Stu McReynolds was successful with the conversion and Canada took a 6-2 lead. That lead was extended half way through the opening stanza when Stephen Lamb blasted his way over at the corner making it 10-2 for Canada. The rest of the first half was a duel with both teams getting close but lacking the killer instinct needed to score tries.

The second half started with a bang as Jamaica obviously fired up from coach Romeo Monteith's team talk came out with all pistons firing, Adrian Mackenzie blasting through the Canada defenders and gliding over for a well worked try. The extras were added by Ryan Grant and it was all to play for at Canada 10 and Jamaica 8.

Canada however responded quickly and Cam Grace finished a move by slamming through the Jamaican defensive line, extending the Canada lead 14-8. More back and forth from both sides ensued with Canada missing numerous chances in the red zone with some dropped balls whilst keeping Jamaica mostly pinned in their own half. Against the run of play Jamaica showed incredible resilience and went over again Fabion Turner breaking the line and zipping 40 metres for the unconverted try. The Jamaicans now pulling to within 2. It was not to be for the visitors and Canada was able to seal victory when veteran Henry Miers crashed over for the game sealing try, Canada taking it by a final score of 18-12 over Jamaica.

The victory seals Canada's second Caribbean Carnival Cup, and is a massive boost for the Wolverines ahead of their big clash with Lebanon in 3 weeks time.
